One Nurse's Journey with Psoriasis
By Jodi Chapin RN
October 29th is World Psoriasis Day, a time dedicated to raising awareness about psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, advocating for improved treatments, and supporting those affected by these conditions. Having lived with both since 1998, I know firsthand the challenges of managing these chronic illnesses. This day offers a critical opportunity to share our stories, foster understanding, and push for better research and care.
Psoriasis is not just a skin condition; it’s a systemic autoimmune disease that manifests as red, scaly patches on the skin, while psoriatic arthritis causes painful, stiff joints. Living with these conditions can be a lifelong battle. For over two decades, I’ve experienced both the physical and emotional tolls. My journey includes some hard-fought lessons and triumphs that I feel compelled to share during this important awareness day.
Feeling Defeated by a Flare-Up
I’m in the middle of a flare, and it feels extremely defeating. For years, I managed my symptoms and even got myself to a point where I was pharmaceutical-free, relying solely on holistic methods to manage my condition. But with this flare, I’ve had to add methotrexate, a medication often used for some cancers in higher doses, to my monthly Talz biologic injections and topical steroid regimen. The setback weighs heavily on me, reminding me how unpredictable and challenging psoriasis can be—even after years of managing it.
The Challenge of Working Through a Flare
As a labor and delivery nurse, my job involves close, intimate contact with patients during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. When my psoriasis flares up, especially on my hands, arms, and face, it makes my work even more difficult. It’s hard not to feel self-conscious, and I worry about how my patients perceive me when I’m visibly affected by my condition. Although I do everything to ensure my flare-ups don’t interfere with patient care, the emotional toll is significant, especially when my hands—the very tools I rely on to bring new life into the world—are affected.
A Life-Changing Experience: Hospitalization and Flare-Ups
One of the most significant episodes in my journey occurred when I suffered a severe psoriatic flare due to a reaction to a medication called Trazodone. The intensity of the flare left me hospitalized, reminding me of the unpredictable nature of autoimmune diseases. This experience was not just physically debilitating but emotionally draining as well. It highlighted the sensitivity of my body to certain medications and the importance of a holistic approach to managing autoimmune conditions.
Managing Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis
Despite the challenges, biologic medications like Talz and Methotrexate have played an essential role in controlling my symptoms. However, managing psoriasis isn't just about medication. I’ve found that lifestyle changes—such as maintaining a healthy diet, staying active, and practicing stress management—are just as crucial. But moments like this flare remind me that the journey is unpredictable and requires constant adjustments.
Becoming a medical cannabis patient and regularly utilizing cannabis medicine has been instrumental in my path to recovery and wellness. I use multiple cannabinoids, including CBD and THC, both topically and internally to reduce pain and inflammation and to upregulate my endocannabinoid system - this also helps to balance my immune system and prevent flares.
World Psoriasis Day: Breaking Barriers
World Psoriasis Day shifts the spotlight onto the global community. It's a time for patients, caregivers, and advocates to unite, share their stories, and push for greater understanding. The theme of "breaking barriers" resonates deeply with me, as living with psoriasis means overcoming physical, emotional, and social challenges.
If you or a loved one is navigating the journey with psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis, I invite you to book a consultation with me at Green Network Providers. Together, we can explore alternative treatments and find the right support tailored to your unique needs.
World Psoriasis Day is a critical time to emphasize key points about these conditions:
Understanding Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis
Psoriasis affects millions globally, and it's more than a skin condition—it’s a lifelong autoimmune disease.
Up to 30% of those with psoriasis develop psoriatic arthritis, which can lead to joint damage if untreated.
Debunking Myths
Not Contagious: Psoriasis cannot be spread through touch or contact.
No Cure: While there’s no cure, effective treatments are available to manage symptoms.
Mental Health Matters
Chronic conditions like psoriasis can deeply affect mental health, contributing to anxiety, depression, and social isolation. Supporting mental well-being is crucial for managing physical symptoms.
Advocacy and Research
Supporting organizations like the National Psoriasis Foundation is essential for advancing research and providing resources to those affected by psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
